Upholstered Furniture Cleaning Instructions

Use these upholstery care and cleaning instructions to help protect the fabric on your Sleep Number upholstered furniture, including upholstered bed frames, headboards and furniture collections.

Before cleaning, find your fabric collection below and follow the recommended method. Always test any cleaner on a small, hidden area first. If you are unsure which fabric you have or the stain is large, set in or difficult to identify, contact a professional upholstery cleaner.

  • Place upholstered furniture away from direct sunlight and heat sources when possible. Sunlight and heat can fade or damage fabric over time.
  • Vacuum or lightly brush upholstery often with a non-metallic, soft-bristle brush to help keep dust and debris from settling into the fabric.
  • Blot spills right away with a clean, dry cloth. Do not rub, because rubbing can spread the stain or damage the fabric texture.
  • Clean the full fabric panel from seam to seam when spot cleaning. Cleaning only the stained area can leave rings or uneven color.

Recommended cleaning instructions by fabric

Use water-free dry-cleaning solvent only

Fabric collections: Signature Collection Stone Linen, Ivory Textured Linen and Charcoal Chenille; Essential Collection Oatmeal Weave and Nickel Weave.

Spot clean only with a water-free dry-cleaning solvent. Test the solvent on a small, hidden area first. Do not saturate the fabric, and do not use water. For spills, blot immediately, then clean the full panel from seam to seam. If the fabric is heavily soiled or needs overall cleaning, contact an IICRC Certified Firm that specializes in upholstery cleaning.

Use water-based upholstery shampoo or foam cleaner

Fabric collection: Signature Collection Graphite Basketweave.

Spot clean only with a water-based shampoo or foam upholstery cleaner. Test the cleaner on a small, hidden area first. Do not over wet the fabric, and do not use solvents. For spills, blot immediately, then clean the full panel from seam to seam. If the fabric is heavily soiled or needs overall cleaning, contact an IICRC Certified Firm that specializes in upholstery cleaning.

Use upholstery shampoo or dry-cleaning solvent

Fabric collections: Signature Collection Pebble Twill, Gray Velvet and Indigo Tweed; Lifestyle Collection Pewter Basketweave, Mist Basketweave, Pearl Tweed Bouclé and Sand Basketweave.

Spot clean with upholstery shampoo or a dry-cleaning solvent designed for furniture. Test the cleaner on a small, hidden area first. Do not saturate the fabric. Pile fabrics, such as velvet or textured weaves, may need gentle brushing with a non-metallic, soft-bristle brush to restore their appearance. Do not use hot water extraction or steam cleaning. Do not remove cushion casings to launder or dry-clean them. For spills, blot immediately, then clean the full panel from seam to seam. If the fabric is heavily soiled or needs overall cleaning, contact an IICRC Certified Firm that specializes in upholstery cleaning.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use water to clean my upholstered furniture?

It depends on the fabric. Some fabrics require water-free dry-cleaning solvent only, while others allow water-based upholstery shampoo or foam cleaner. Always use the cleaning method listed for your fabric collection.

Should I clean only the stain?

No. After blotting the spill, clean the entire fabric panel from seam to seam. This helps prevent water rings, spotting or uneven color.

When should I call a professional cleaner?

Call a professional upholstery cleaner if the stain is large, set in, unknown, difficult to remove or if the furniture needs overall cleaning. For best results, use an IICRC Certified Firm that specializes in upholstery cleaning.

Please note: Always test any product or technique on a small, hidden area before overall cleaning. Sleep Number does not endorse a specific cleaning product or method for fabric. We recommend using a professional upholstery cleaning service whenever possible.
