Applies to all Sleep Number® beds.
Use this guide to install or replace the Firmness Control™, Smart Control™ System or Core Control System in your Sleep Number® bed. This process is easier with two people, and we recommend watching the video for your bed before starting.
Note: "Control System" and "pump" can be used interchangeably.
Quick Overview: Replace a Sleep Number® Control System
- Unplug your bed and make sure the mattress or adjustable base is safe to access.
- Disconnect hoses at the air chambers (coming out of the mattress) then cap the air chambers to help keep air inside.
- Locate the control system based on your base type.
- Disconnect the hoses, connectors, and power cord from the old control system.
- Install the new control system, reconnect the hoses and wires, then plug the bed back in.
- Pair the new control system using the Sleep Number® app or remote.
Before you Replace the Control System
Before you begin, gather the items below and make sure you have enough space to safely access the control system (pump) area.
- Two people (recommended)
- White air chamber caps (you can order them online or visit a Sleep Number store near you)
- Replacement control system (pump)
- Sleep number® app or remote
Tip: Plan for about 30–45 minutes. Two people are recommended, especially if you need to lift or hold the mattress while accessing the control system.
Safety reminder: FlexFit® adjustable bases with magnet attach
- Keep magnets separated and away from other metal objects to help prevent pinching.
- If you have a medical device or implant, stay at least 6 inches away from a disassembled mattress or base.
- Keep magnets away from electronics, magnetic storage devices, and debit or credit cards.
Step-by-Step Control System Replacement Instructions
Follow the steps below to replace the control system in your Sleep Number® bed. Use the instructions for your base type and check that each hose and connector clicks securely into place before pairing the new system. Prefer a video? See Additional Resources.
Note: If you have an integrated base with a compartment, it may be easier to disconnect and remove the mattress before replacing the control system.
Step 1: Prepare your bed
- Ensure your bed is in the flat position (adjustable bases only).
- Remove all bedding, then unplug your bed from power.
- Disconnect each air hose by pressing the tab and gently pulling the hose away from the air chamber.
- Place a white closure cap on the air chamber to keep air inside.
Step 2: Access the control system
- Locate the control system for your bed setup.
- If you have an integrated base: Stand at the foot of your bed and move the mattress to the left so it slightly hangs off the edge of the base. Lift the compartment lid to access the control system.
- If you do not have a base or purchased your bed before 2017 or a ComfortMode™ Mattress: The control system is usually placed on the floor at the head of the bed.
- If you have a FlexFit® adjustable base: The control system is located on the sleeper-left side at the foot of the bed, underneath the base.
-
FlexFit® adjustable bases only: Disconnect the mattress from the base at the foot of the bed. Lift the decking panels to access the control system. One person should hold the mattress while the other disconnects the old control system and installs the new one.
- Magnet Attach – Lift the mattress at the foot of the bed. Use your thumbs to push up on the edge of each magnet and disconnect it from the base.
- Strap Attach – Lift the mattress at the foot of the bed. Find the gray straps, lift the loose end to unsnap the straps.
- Mattresses purchased before 2017: Unzip the mattress cover, remove the cover and foam comfort layer and foam border.
Step 3: Disconnect the old control system
- Hoses: Press down on the tab while gently pulling the connector away from the control system.
- Connectors: Press the tab down while gently pulling at the head of the connector (adjustable bases only).
- Power cord: Pull from the head of the connector to remove it.
- Remove the old control system.
Step 4: Install the new control system
- Smart Beds only: Find the MAC address on the new control system and write it down. You may need it during pairing.
- Place the new control system near where the old one was located.
- Reconnect each hose by gently pushing until you hear or feel the connector click into place.
- Reconnect the remaining wire connectors by gently pushing each plug into the matching port.
- Place the control system back into the compartment, bin or shelf or place it near the head of the bed.
- Plug the bed back in.
- Mattresses purchased before 2017: Place all foam parts back inside your mattress. Zip the top panel to the bottom section of your mattress cover to close your bed.
Step 5: Pair the new control system
- Sleep Number® app: Required for Smart Control™ systems.
- Go to Smart Bed > Bed Settings > Install Replacement Electronics.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to complete setup.
- Remote:

Troubleshooting After Replacing the Control System
If your bed does not adjust, pair, or respond after installation, use the checks below before contacting support.
If the bed is not adjusting
- Confirm the bed is plugged in and the outlet has power.
- Check that each hose is fully connected and clicked into place.
- Make sure the hoses are not pinched, twisted, or pulled tight under the bed.
- Unplug the bed for 20 seconds, then plug it back in and try again.
If the app does not find the new control system
- Make sure you are near the bed with Bluetooth turned on.
- Confirm you selected Install Replacement Electronics in the Sleep Number® app.
- Check that you entered or selected the correct MAC address, if prompted.
- Close and reopen the app, then try the pairing steps again.
If the remote is not working
- Replace the remote batteries, if needed.
- Confirm the bed is plugged in and the control system has power.
- Complete the linked remote factory reset steps, then try pairing again.
If air releases when disconnecting hoses
A small amount of air release can be normal when hoses are disconnected. To keep air in the chamber during installation, use the white air chamber caps while the hoses are disconnected.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the control system the same as the pump?
Yes. In this article, control system and pump refer to the same part.
How long does it take to replace a Sleep Number® control system?
Most replacements take about 30–45 minutes. It may take longer if the control system is harder to access or if you have an adjustable base.
Do I need two people?
Two people are recommended. This helps if the mattress needs to be lifted, held, or moved while the control system is being disconnected and installed.
Why do I need the MAC address?
The MAC address helps identify the new control system during pairing. Write it down before placing the control system back into the compartment, bin, or shelf.
What should I do if my bed will not pair after installation?
Confirm the bed is plugged in, your phone is near the bed, Bluetooth is turned on, and the hoses and wire connectors are fully seated. Then restart the app and try the pairing steps again.
Can I use the remote instead of the Sleep Number® app?
Use the Sleep Number® app for Smart Control™ systems. If you use a remote, complete the linked factory reset steps to pair it with the new control system.
