Peace of Mind for Your Sleep: Addressing Mattress Allergens

Seeing something unusual in your mattress can raise concerns about allergens or mold. This article explains what you may be seeing, what it usually means, and how Sleep Number® materials are designed to support a cleaner sleep environment. If you still have questions, we are always here to help.

If you notice material inside the hoses

Some customers notice a light‑colored or powdery substance inside mattress hoses. While it can look concerning at first, this material is most often a manufacturing residue, such as a plasticizer, resin, or talc.

Returned products with this material have been carefully tested, and results confirmed it was not mold. Sleep Number® mattresses are made with materials designed to resist mold and microbial growth and meet ASTM G21 standards.

If what you are seeing causes concern or does not feel right to you, we are happy to help. Your comfort and peace of mind matter.

If you see discoloration on the foam

Discoloration on foam can be surprising to see, but it does not automatically mean mold. In many cases, it is a normal result of everyday use.

Common causes can include:

  • Moisture over time
  • Skin cells
  • Body oils
  • Normal wear

Sleep Number® foam materials are tested to resist mold and microbial growth and meet ASTM G21 standards, making them less likely to support mold than many common household furniture items.

Helpful tip: Using a Total Protection Mattress Pad (TPMP) can help reduce moisture, limit discoloration, and protect the mattress components inside.
