Should I use a surge protector with my Sleep Number® bed?

Overview

Yes. We recommend using a surge protector with most Sleep Number® mattresses, DualTemp® Layers and adjustable bases. It helps protect your bed from power surges, so your sleep setup stays protected. Using a surge protector, or not using one, does not change your warranty.

  • Surge protectors often last 3 to 5 years. If your bed is not working, try testing the surge protector with another device, like a lamp or phone charger.

Do not use a surge protector with traditional FlexFit® 1, 2 or 3 control boxes

Applies to bases that were purchased prior to 2017.

  • Do not plug traditional FlexFit® 1, 2 or 3 control boxes into a surge protector. These bases may need more power than a standard surge protector can handle, which can cause the base to stop working, malfunction or trip the surge protector.
  • These bases may need more power than a standard surge protector is rated to handle.
  • If you are not sure which base you have, use the Bases owner’s manuals to help identify your model.

What surge protector should I use?

Choose a standard surge protector made for household electronics, like a computer or TV. Look for these ratings: UL 1449 compliant, 15 amps or higher and 3,000 joules or higher.

  • UL 1449 compliant surge protectors meet a common safety standard for home electronics.
  • A 330-volt clamping voltage offers strong protection. This detail may not always be listed on the package.

What do the surge protector ratings mean?

UL 1449: A safety standard for surge protectors used with home electronics.

  • Clamping voltage: The amount of voltage that can pass through during a power surge. Lower is better.
  • Amps: The amount of power the surge protector can handle. Choose 15 amps or higher.

Joule rating: The amount of energy the surge protector can absorb before it stops protecting your devices. Choose 3,000 joules or higher when possible.
