Bed Buying Guide

Shopping for a new bed? In this guide, you'll find answers to frequently asked questions and things to consider before you buy.

What is a Sleep Number® setting?

Your Sleep Number® setting is the firmness level that you can adjust in your Sleep Number® smart bed. Somewhere between zero and 100 is your ideal level of comfort and support, 100 being the most firm. All Sleep Number beds also feature DualAir™ adjustability, which allows each side of the mattress to have a unique Sleep Number setting.

When you visit a Sleep Number store, one of our sleep professionals will help you find your Sleep Number setting.

What is SleepIQ® technology?

SleepIQ® technology works with sensors inside your Sleep Number mattress, your home Wi-Fi network and the Sleep Number® app to track and optimize your sleep. The Sleep Number app is easy to use. After setting up the Sleep Number app, there is nothing to wear or turn on. Your bed tracks your sleep while you’re in bed.

How do I control the bed?

A Sleep Number bed is controlled with the Sleep Number app or Sleep Number remote. Through these, you can find or adjust your Sleep Number setting and adjust the position of your FlexFit™ adjustable base.

What are the sizes and dimensions?

Note: Mattress dimensions may vary, including slight expansion over time and may initially measure under the stated dimensions based on model and build to ensure proper base fit over time.

Sleep Number mattresses come in all standard industry mattress sizes and will fit into traditional frames and furniture sets. FlexFit adjustable bases can stand-alone or be placed inside of your freestanding bed frame. Note that King and California King size mattresses and adjustable bases are also available in split sizes, so that you and your partner can have the luxury of raising the head and foot of your FlexFit base independently.

See below for standard sizes:

Twin: 38" x 75"

Twin XL: 38" x 80"

Full/Double: 54" x 75"

Queen: 60" x 80"

King: 76" x 80"

California King: 72" x 84"

Do I need a base?

A Sleep Number bed requires a firm flat surface to evenly support the air chambers inside your bed. A traditional box spring does not provide the support required for a Sleep Number mattress. The firm solid surface offered by a Sleep Number base, platform furniture or slats no more than 2 inches apart is the ideal surface for your Sleep Number mattress.

Are the beds good for couples?

Yes. Our bed is perfect for couples because it eliminates the need for compromise. It's always adjustable on each side, so you can both sleep comfortably. In fact, it was named the "Best Bed for Couples" by a leading consumer magazine.

Can Sleep Number help with aches and pains?

Owning a Sleep Number smart bed is a step in the right direction to finding comfort from some aches and pains. While innerspring mattresses can unevenly distribute weight creating uncomfortable pressure points, the DualAir™ technology available in your Sleep Number® smart bed allows you to adjust to your ideal level of firmness, comfort and support—your Sleep Number® setting.
