Checklist: Getting Ready for Your DeliveryMake sure you are prepared when your new Sleep Number purchase arrives. |
Unboxing Your True Temp™ Zone Mattress
Getting your new mattress ready is simple. Before opening the box, move it into the room where it will be used. For larger mattress sizes, consider having two people assist with moving and positioning the mattress.
Once you're ready, carefully open the box and remove the compressed mattress. Use caution when cutting any packaging materials to avoid damaging the mattress. Unroll the mattress on your bed frame with the top side facing up and positioned correctly.
Carefully remove the plastic wrapping. As the mattress is compressed and under pressure, it may expand quickly when released.
Your mattress will begin expanding right away and should take shape within minutes. You can sleep on it the same night, though it may take up to 72 hours for the mattress to fully expand and reach its intended size.

Do True Temp™ Zone Mattress have a smell out of the box?
Some mattresses may have a slight scent when first unboxed. This is normal and should fade as the mattress airs out. Most customers notice the scent disappears within a few hours to a few days, leaving your mattress ready for a comfortable night's sleep.
How do I get the smell out of a new True Temp™ Zone Mattress?
Open the windows, turn on a fan, and let the mattress air out for at least a day. If the new mattress smell persists, try sprinkling baking soda on top and then vacuuming it up after two hours.
Should I rotate my True Temp™ Zone Mattress?
Yes! Rotate (do not flip) your mattress every three to six months for even wear.
Good to know: Mattresses used with a Sleep Number® adjustable base with remote are not designed to be rotated. Rotating the mattress may prevent the retaining straps from aligning correctly with the attachment plates.
How do I clean my True Temp™ Zone Mattress?
Spot clean only with a mild detergent and a damp cloth. Do not remove the cover for cleaning.
We recommend using a mattress protector to help protect your mattress.
Will my True Temp™ Zone Mattress come in a box if being delivered by Sleep Number?
Depending on the delivery service selected, your mattress will either be delivered to your doorstep or brought into your home. For standard and premium delivery options, our delivery team will set up your mattress in your room of choice so it's ready to use.
Comfort, Adjustment and Care for your new mattress
Getting used to a new mattress can take time. As your mattress expands, settles and adjusts to regular use, you may notice changes in how it looks or feels. That's normal. Explore the topics below for answers to common questions and tips to help you get the most comfort and support from your new Sleep Number® mattress.
What should I expect while my new mattress expands?
While your new mattress expands, its height, shape and feel may become more consistent. Allow up to 72 hours for it to adjust to its full size.
How can I get comfortable on a mattress that feels firmer than expected?
It is common for a new True Temp™ Zone Mattress to feel firmer at first. During the mattress break-in period, the comfort materials adjust to your body and regular use, so the feel may become more consistent over time.
To help improve comfort:
- Give your body time to adjust to the new sleep surface.
- Make sure your mattress is supported by a compatible foundation or base.
- Use breathable bedding that allows the comfort layers to perform as designed.
- Try to maintain your usual sleep position while your body adapts to the new level of support.
If you recently switched from a softer mattress, your body may need time to adjust to a different comfort and support experience.
How can I find the right comfort and support?
Finding the right comfort and support is personal. Your ideal sleep experience depends on factors like your preferred sleep position, body type, and comfort preferences.
To help you get the most from your mattress:
- Give your body time to adjust to the new sleep surface.
- Make sure your mattress is supported by a compatible foundation or base.
- Sleep in your preferred position and pay attention to how your body feels when you wake up.
- Consider your overall sleep environment, including pillows, bedding, and room temperature.
A mattress should help you feel supported while allowing you to relax comfortably throughout the night. As your mattress settles and your body adjusts, you may notice improvements in comfort and pressure relief.
If you're transitioning from a mattress that felt significantly softer or firmer, it's normal for the new feel to take some getting used to. Consistent use can help your body adapt to the support and comfort of your new mattress.
Tip: Your pillow plays an important role in comfort and alignment. Choosing a pillow that supports your preferred sleep position can help enhance your overall sleep experience.
How long does it take to adjust to a new mattress?
Adjusting to a new mattress can take time. During this break-in period, your body becomes familiar with a different feel and level of support after adapting to your previous mattress, even if it was no longer providing ideal comfort.
During the adjustment period:
- Sleep on your new mattress consistently each night.
- Give yourself time to become familiar with the new support and pressure relief.
- Follow a regular sleep routine when possible.
- Allow the mattress to fully expand and settle after setup before evaluating its comfort.
Many sleepers find that comfort improves as both the mattress and their body adapt to the new sleep surface.
How can I sleep more comfortably if my mattress feels warm?
Several factors can influence how warm you feel while sleeping, including room temperature, bedding, sleepwear, and individual sleep preferences.
To help create a cooler sleep environment:
- Keep your bedroom at a comfortable temperature.
- Choose lightweight, breathable sheets and blankets.
- Wear breathable sleepwear.
- Avoid layering heavy bedding unless needed for comfort.
Creating a cooler sleep environment can help support more comfortable sleep throughout the night.
How can I help my mattress stay comfortable and supportive?
Regular care can help your mattress perform as intended over time.
We recommend:
- Using a supportive, compatible foundation or base.
- Keeping the mattress clean and protected with an appropriate mattress protector.
- Following all care instructions provided with your mattress.
- Avoiding jumping or standing on the mattress, which can place excess stress on the comfort materials.
Proper support and care can help maintain comfort and promote even wear.
Are body impressions or slight indentations normal as my mattress settles?
Yes. Minor body impressions and softening of comfort materials are a normal part of the break-in process for many mattresses.
As comfort layers respond to regular use, you may notice slight changes in how the mattress feels. These changes are expected and are different from manufacturing defects.
If you notice a deeper impression or an unusual change in comfort, contact Sleep Number for additional support.
How can I help a new-mattress scent fade?
A temporary scent may be most noticeable when a new mattress is first unpacked. Airing out the mattress after removing the packaging can help the scent fade.
The scent is typically most noticeable during initial setup and generally decreases as the mattress airs out.
To help the scent dissipate more quickly:
- Remove all packaging materials after setup.
- Allow the mattress to air out in a well-ventilated room.
- Open windows or increase airflow when possible.
Most customers find that any initial scent fades over time.
How can I help my new mattress feel even and comfortable?
After unpacking, your mattress may need time to fully expand and settle into its intended shape.
For the best experience:
- Place the mattress on a compatible foundation or base before use.
- Allow the mattress to fully expand according to the setup instructions provided with your product.
- Ensure bedding is not restricting the mattress as it settles.
- Check that the sleep surface is resting evenly across the foundation or base.
As the mattress expands and adjusts to regular use, its feel and appearance may become more consistent.
Compatible Bases
A True Temp™ Zone Mattress works with several support systems: a Sleep Number® Foundation and Integrated Base, a Sleep Number® Adjustable Base with Remote, a Lifestyle Collection Furniture Set, select third-party adjustable bases, a standard box spring or a bunkie board.
Before setup, make sure your mattress is placed on a properly sized and supportive base. Using a compatible support system helps promote comfort, performance, and even wear over time.
