Remote operating wrong side of bed

Applies to ADAT remotes (9, 7, & 3-button) and Universal remotes (12, 9, & 5-button) for Traditional Sleep Number beds purchased before 2017.

What this means

  • Sleep Number remotes identify Sleeper Left and Sleeper Right based on how you would be lying in bed, facing the ceiling.
  • If your remote is inflating, deflating, or adjusting the wrong side, the left and right hose connections may be reversed.
  • If both sides adjust together, or if a Split King will not control each side independently, the base or remote may be set to the wrong configuration.
  • If the Sleep Number app and remote do not match, your bed or remote may need to be restarted or re-paired.

Step-by-Step Troubleshooting

Step 1: Check the side selected on the remote

  • Make sure the remote is set to the side you want to adjust.
  • If your remote supports side selection, switch between Left and Right and test again.
    • Traditional Remotes: Use the Left/Right button.
    • ADAT Remotes: Use the button located on the side of the remote.

If you are not sure which remote model you have, check the Historic Mattress Remote User Guides or your bed manual.

Step 2: Check the hose connections

Make sure the left and right hoses are connected to the matching side of the air chamber.

  • If you need help finding the hoses, refer to your existing bed manual.
  • If you are standing at the foot of the bed and the sides seem reversed, use the sleeper orientation above instead of room position.
  • Look for the L marking on the left hose. It appears every foot along the length of the hose.
  • Some pumps may also have color-coded hose connectors.
    • White = Left side
    • Blue = Right side
  • If your bed has been moved or reconnected after service, double-check that the hoses were not swapped at the head or foot of the bed.

Step 3: Check your base setup and configuration

If you have a Split King or FlexTop King FlexFit® adjustable base, and your remote is not operating your Sleep Number and Bed Position on the same side of the bed, it is likely that one of the components is not installed properly.

  • Check the FlexFit junction cables to be sure that the right-side base is plugged into the corresponding Sleep Number right side of the FlexFit Control System, and the left base is plugged into the corresponding Sleep Number left side of the FlexFit Control System.
  • The Junction Cable / Wire Harness for the FlexFit™ adjustable bases are not marked, but the ports on the Control Box where they plug in are.

Step 4: Restart or reprogram after installation or a power outage

  • If the issue started after installation, service, or a power outage, verify all hose and base connections again before reprogramming the remote.
  • If your remote or base requires pairing or setup, use the instructions in your remote guide.
