If the two sides of your King adjustable base are not moving as expected, reset the base, check for obstructions and inspect the sync cable. Follow the steps below to restore normal movement.
Applies to: Adjustable Bases with Remote sold in 2026 or later.
For all other bases, please refer to troubleshooting articles for your model.
How should my King adjustable base move?
- Eastern King and California King: Both sides should raise and lower together.
- Split King: Each side should move independently.
- Note: The Adjustable Base is not offered with a FlexTop® King mattress, but the base can be reprogrammed to function in a FlexTop® King configuration. Press and hold both down arrows until you hear a beep. Repeat this action to return to an Eastern King configuration, or power cycle the base.
Signs your King adjustable base is out of sync
- The right and left sides do not move together when they should.
- A standard King base moves as if it were a Split King.
- One side responds differently from the other.
Quick answer: How do I resync my King adjustable base?
Move the base flat, unplug both sides for 30 seconds and plug them back in. If the issue continues, remove any obstructions and inspect the sync cable under the base. Some steps require two people.
See the detailed steps below for full troubleshooting.
What you will need
- Two people
- Your adjustable base remote or remotes
- Only if your mattress has air chambers: White air chamber caps, typically stored inside the bed or base. If you do not have caps, visit your local Sleep Number store or order them online.
Before you begin
- Confirm how your base should move: Eastern King and California King sides move together; Split King sides move independently.
- Check whether your mattress uses an air system. If your bed does not have a Sleep Number setting or air chambers, skip any instructions about inflating the mattress, disconnecting air hoses or using air chamber caps.
- Keep the base unplugged while inspecting connections underneath it.
Step 1: Reset the adjustable base
Use the remote to move the base flat. Unplug each side for 30 seconds, plug both sides back in and test each remote.
- Eastern King and California King: Both sides should move together.
- Split King: Each side should move independently.
Step 2: Check for anything blocking the base
Remove anything that could prevent the base from moving.
Look around the head and foot of the base, near walls or furniture and underneath the base.
Step 3: Unplug both sides of the base
Keep both sides unplugged until the base is back in its normal position.
Step 4: Remove the mattress and access the underside of the base
Two people are required for this step.
- If your mattress has a Sleep Number setting and air chambers: Inflate both sides to 100, disconnect the air hoses and cap the air chambers.
- If your mattress does not have a Sleep Number setting or air chambers: Skip the air-system steps and follow the mattress removal instructions for your model.
- Unstrap the mattress, if applicable, and remove it from the base.
- Remove the bed links at the head and foot before turning the base.
- With one person supporting the base, carefully place it on its side so the other person can inspect the connections underneath.
Step 5: Inspect the sync cable
Confirm that the sync cable is securely connected to both control boxes. Check the cable and connectors for visible damage.
- If you find damage, contact us for replacement.
Step 6: Return the base to its normal position and test it
Return the base to its normal position, plug in both sides and use the remote to raise and lower the head and foot.
- If the base moves correctly, put the mattress back in place and attach any straps.
- If your mattress uses air chambers, reconnect the air hoses and remove the chamber caps before using the bed.
Step 7: Contact Sleep Number
If the base is still out of sync, contact us. Be ready to share the steps you completed and whether the issue affects one or both sides.

Frequently asked questions
Why are the two sides of my King adjustable base moving separately?
A standard Eastern King or California King base should move together. If the sides move separately, reset both sides and inspect the sync cable. A Split King is designed to move independently.
What if my bed does not have a Sleep Number® setting?
You can still follow the adjustable base troubleshooting steps. Skip instructions about inflating the mattress, air hoses and air chamber caps, and follow the mattress removal guidance for your model.
