Responsive Air® technology automatically helps your Sleep Number® mattress maintain your selected Sleep Number® setting while you sleep. It detects pressure changes caused by movement, sleep position, room temperature and other factors—then makes small air adjustments to help keep each side comfortable.
How often does Responsive Air® adjust?
- When you first settle into bed, you may notice a slight decrease in pressure as the mattress conforms around you.
- Responsive Air® checks pressure about once per hour on each side while you sleep.
- It adjusts for changes caused by room temperature and sleep position to help maintain your selected Sleep Number® setting.
- About 30 minutes after everyone gets out of bed, you may hear the bed adding air. This is normal.
- During the day, Responsive Air® continues checking pressure about every four hours.
How does Responsive Air® work with different Sleep Number beds?
How Responsive Air operates depends on your mattress and adjustable base. Review the details for your bed below.
Climate360® smart beds
- When a core temperature feature is running, Responsive Air® turns on for both sides and checks pressure, regardless of the bed's position.
- After the temperature cycle ends, Responsive Air® checks pressure about once per hour.
- After everyone has been out of bed for at least 30 minutes, Responsive Air® returns to its previous setting.
Sleep Number® 360 smart beds, Sleep Number® smart beds, ComfortMode™ and ComfortNext™ mattresses
- Responsive Air does not adjust when the head of the bed is raised above the snore position.
- The position of the foot of the bed may also affect Responsive Air adjustments.
One sleeper on a dual-chamber bed
Sleep fully on one side of the mattress. If you lie across both chambers, Responsive Air® may not work as intended.
360 FlexFit® adjustable base with attached remote and Smart Beds on non-Sleep Number adjustable bases:
- Responsive Air® will not work as designed with a 360 FlexFit® adjustable base with attached remote or a non-Sleep Number adjustable base as it cannot detect if the adjustable base is articulated.
Is Responsive Air® noisy?
Responsive Air® adjustments are designed to be quiet and subtle. You may hear a soft hum from the pump during an adjustment.
How do I know Responsive Air® is working?
- Responsive Air® does not adjust every time you move. It checks and adjusts periodically throughout the night.
- You may briefly hear or feel the bed adjust after you get in.
- On supported beds, Responsive Air® can continue working during a Wi-Fi interruption if the bed has connected to Wi-Fi at least once.
- Sleep Number 360® smart beds: Responsive Air® will not adjust, and you cannot turn it on or off, when the bed is disconnected from Wi-Fi.
- Troubleshoot Responsive Air® if the bed is not adjusting as expected.
Frequently asked questions about Responsive® Air
Does Responsive Air® change my Sleep Number setting?
No. Responsive Air® makes small pressure adjustments to help maintain the Sleep Number setting you selected.
Why does my Sleep Number bed adjust after I get out?
About 30 minutes after everyone leaves the bed, Responsive Air® may add air and return the mattress to its expected pressure. Hearing the pump at this time is normal.
Does Responsive Air® work without Wi-Fi?
On some supported beds, it can continue working after the bed has connected to Wi-Fi at least once. Sleep Number 360® smart beds must remain connected to Wi-Fi for Responsive Air® to adjust.
Why isn't Responsive Air® adjusting?
The bed's position, your sleeping position, Wi-Fi connectivity, or the type of adjustable base may affect adjustments. Use the troubleshooting guide if Responsive Air® is not working as expected.
Does Responsive Air® cool or heat the bed?
No. Responsive Air® adjusts air pressure for comfort. Temperature features, such as Core Heating or Cooling on Climate360® smart beds, are separate features.
Do all Sleep Number® beds support Responsive Air®?
No. Some Sleep Number beds do not support Responsive Air®. Availability depends on your bed model and collection.
Does Responsive Air® work in Zero Gravity?
Responsive Air® may not adjust as expected if the head or foot of the bed is elevated above the Snore position. If your base is in Zero Gravity, return it to Flat and test Responsive Air again.
Can I turn Responsive Air® off?
Yes. Use the Sleep Number® app to turn Responsive Air® off for most smart beds. For select ComfortMode™ mattresses with Responsive Air®, use the remote.
