Before you troubleshoot, make sure all sleepers are out of bed for at least 30 minutes. Responsive Air® may continue checking pressure after you leave the bed.

If you own a ComfortMode™ mattress, skip to Step 2: Make sure Responsive Air® is turned on.

Step 1: Make sure your bed is registered and connected

Make sure:

  • Your bed is registered.
  • You are signed in to the correct account.
  • Your bed is online.
  • Bluetooth is enabled if you are using the app near the bed.
  • Your app is updated.

Important:

  • For 360 smart beds purchased from 2017 to 2022, the bed needs to be online for Responsive Air® to adjust and for you to turn the feature on or off.
  • For Sleep Number® smart beds purchased in 2023 or later, Responsive Air® may continue working if Wi-Fi drops, as long as the bed has connected to Wi-Fi at least once.

Step 2: Make sure Responsive Air® is turned on

Check both sides of the bed in the Sleep Number® app or ComfortMode™ remote. Each sleeper can choose whether Responsive Air® is on or off for their side.

If Responsive Air® is missing, appears on only one side or seems assigned to the wrong side, make sure:

  • You selected the correct side of the bed.
  • The app is updated. (360 smart beds, Sleep Number® smart beds, Climate™ and ComfortNext™ Collections only)
  • The bed supports Responsive Air®.
  • The bed completed setup and registration. (360 smart beds, Sleep Number® smart beds, Climate™ and ComfortNext™ Collections only)

Step 3: Put your adjustable base in the Flat position

If you have a FlexFit® Adjustable Base, place the head and foot of the bed in the Flat position or at or below the Snore position. Responsive Air® may not adjust when the head or foot is raised above the Snore position.

Climate360® beds behave differently when Core Heating or Cooling is active.

Step 4: Check for weight or sleep-position changes

Responsive Air® responds to pressure changes. If two people, a pet or a child are on the same side of the bed, Responsive Air® may sense extra pressure and release more air.

Your bed may feel softer than expected if:

  • One sleeper moves to the middle.
  • One sleeper rolls onto the other side.
  • A pet or child lies on one side.
  • Someone sits or sleeps near the edge of the bed.

You can adjust your Sleep Number® setting in the app or remote, or wait for Responsive Air® to make its next adjustment.

Step 5: Restart your bed

Like a phone or computer, your bed may need to restart.

Sleep Number® 360 smart beds purchased from 2017 to 2022 or ComfortMode™ remote users
  1. Unplug the bed from the outlet.
  2. Leave it unplugged for 60 seconds.
  3. Plug it back in.
  4. Allow the bed to fully power back on before testing Responsive Air® again.
Climate™ Collection and Sleep Number® smart beds purchased in 2023 or later
  1. Open the Sleep Number® app.
  2. Tap Smart Bed.
  3. Go to Settings.
  4. Select Restart Bed.

If this option is not available, please follow restart directions for Sleep Number® 360 smart beds purchased from 2017 to 2022 or ComfortMode™ remote users.

Step 6: Lie in bed and check for normal adjustment

Lie on your side of the bed and wait for Responsive Air® to engage. You may feel a slight pressure change or hear a soft hum. Responsive Air® may not adjust immediately if it does not detect a pressure change.

Step 7: Check for possible air loss

If your pump runs often, takes a long time to fill, the mattress slowly loses air or one side is flat by morning, Responsive Air® may not be the cause. A slow air leak can make it seem like Responsive Air® is not working correctly.

Check that the air hoses are securely connected to the mattress on both sides of the bed. If the bed continues losing air, follow My Bed is Losing Air.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Responsive Air® not showing in my app?

Responsive Air® may not show if:

  • Your bed does not support Responsive Air®.
  • You selected the wrong side of the bed.
  • Your bed is not registered.
  • You are signed into the wrong account.
  • Your app needs to be updated.
  • Your bed has not completed setup.
Why is Responsive Air® only showing on one side of my bed?

Responsive Air® is controlled separately for each side of the bed. If it only appears on one side, check that both sleepers are assigned correctly in the Sleep Number app, the correct side is selected and your bed supports Responsive Air on both sides.

Why does Responsive Air® keep turning back on?

For Climate360® smart beds, Responsive Air® will automatically turn on when Core Heating or Cooling is active. After the cycle is complete and all sleepers have been out of bed for at least 30 minutes, Responsive Air® may return to its previous setting.

Can I turn Responsive Air® off?

Yes. Use the Sleep Number® app to turn Responsive Air® off for most smart beds. For select ComfortMode™ mattresses with Responsive Air®, use the remote.

Why does my bed fill with air after I get up?

It is normal to hear the bed fill with air about 30 minutes after sleepers get out of bed. Responsive Air® may continue checking pressure during the day.

Why does my Sleep Number® bed feel softer with Responsive Air®?

Responsive Air® may release a small amount of air when it senses a pressure change. This can happen when you get into bed, change positions or share weight across one side of the mattress.

Why does my Sleep Number® bed feel firmer with Responsive Air®?

Your bed may feel firmer if Responsive Air® adds air to help maintain your selected Sleep Number® setting. Room temperature, sleep position and pressure changes can also affect how the mattress feels.

Why doesn’t Responsive Air® work when my bed is elevated?

Responsive Air® may not adjust when the head or foot of a FlexFit® Adjustable Base is raised above the Snore position. Put the bed in the Flat position or at or below Snore position and test again.

Can a slow air leak affect Responsive Air®?

Yes. A slow air leak can cause the pump to run more often and make it seem like Responsive Air® is not working. If your bed loses firmness overnight, check hose connections and follow Air Loss Troubleshooting.

Why does my bed feel flat or lose air overnight?

If your bed loses air overnight, Responsive Air® may not be the cause. Check that the air hoses are securely connected. If one side continues to lose air, follow Air Loss Troubleshooting.

What if Responsive Air® works on one side but not the other?

Check both sides in the Sleep Number® app or Remote. Make sure Responsive Air® is turned on for the side that is not adjusting, then restart the bed and test again. If one side still will not adjust, contact support.
