Learn what the ER error means on your Sleep Number® DualTemp™ remote and how to restore power or reconnect your heating and cooling source.
Quick Answer
An ER error on a DualTemp™ remote usually means the remote cannot communicate with the heating and cooling source, or the heating and cooling source is not getting power. Start by checking the outlet, power cord, power brick and remote batteries. Then restart the system to reconnect the remote.
What does ER mean on a DualTemp™ remote?
ER means the DualTemp™ remote is not communicating with the heating and cooling source. This can happen when the system loses power, a cord is loose, batteries are low or the remote needs to reconnect after a power interruption.
Common causes include:
- The heating and cooling source is unplugged.
- The outlet is not supplying power.
- The power supply connection is loose.
- The remote and heating and cooling source have lost communication.
- Batteries need attention.
- A recent power interruption occurred.
Before you troubleshoot the ER error
- Make sure you are using the remote that came with the affected DualTemp™ layer.
- Replace the remote batteries if the display is dim, blank or slow to respond.
- Confirm the heating and cooling source is close enough to the remote to reconnect.
Step 1: Check outlet power
First, make sure the DualTemp™ system is receiving power.
- Plug the power cord into a working outlet.
- Avoid outlets controlled by a wall switch.
- Check that the power brick light is on.
- If you are unsure the outlet works, plug another device into the same outlet to test it.
Step 2: Check the power cord and power brick
- Make sure the power cord is fully connected to the heating and cooling source.
- Check that the cord is facing the correct direction. If it is upside down, the system may buzz and show an ER error.
- Gray DualTemp™ model (white power cord): The flat side of the connector should face up.
-
White DualTemp™ model (black power cord): The flat side of the connector should face down.
-
Confirm the power cord is securely connected to the power brick.
- The power brick light should be green when the system is getting power.
-
If the power brick light stays orange after checking the cord connection, contact Customer Support.
Step 3: Restart the DualTemp™ system
A restart often clears the ER message by restoring communication between the remote and heating and cooling source.
- Remove the batteries from the remote.
- Unplug the DualTemp™ power cord from the wall outlet.
- Wait 30 seconds.
- Plug the system back in.
- Reinstall the batteries.
- Wait for the remote to reconnect.
Step 4: Reset or reconnect your DualTemp™ remote
If you have a 3-button DualTemp™ remote
- Remove the batteries from the remote and keep them nearby.
- Unplug the DualTemp™ power cord, then plug it back in.
- Within 60 seconds, put the batteries back into the remote.
- Follow the remote prompts to name your remote.
- The fan may turn on when the reset is complete.
If you have a 5-button DualTemp™ remote
- Press and hold the up and down arrow buttons until the System or Rename Remote menu opens.
- Scroll to Factory Reset.
- Use the power button to select and again to select Yes.
- Unplug and plug in the DualTemp™ power cord when prompted.
- Follow the remote prompts to name your remote.
- The fan may turn on when the reset is complete.
How to know the ER error is fixed
After the system reconnects:
- The ER message should disappear.
- The remote should return to the temperature screen.
- The heating and cooling source should respond when you select a temperature.
- You may hear airflow start when a setting is selected.

DualTemp™ ER error FAQs
Why does ER appear after replacing remote batteries?
If ER appears right after you replace the batteries, the remote may need to reconnect to the heating and cooling source.
- Remove the batteries again.
- Unplug the DualTemp™ power cord, then plug it back in.
- Reinsert fresh batteries.
- Wait for the remote to reconnect.
Why does ER appear after a power outage?
A power outage can interrupt communication between the DualTemp™ remote and heating and cooling source.
Complete the restart steps above to restore communication.
Why does ER appear during DualTemp™ setup?
If ER appears while setting up a new DualTemp™ layer, check power and pairing before restarting setup.
- Confirm the heating and cooling source is plugged into a grounded outlet.
- Make sure the power brick light is on.
- Follow each pairing prompt on the remote.
- Restart the setup process if needed.
Why does my DualTemp™ remote say ER?
Your DualTemp™ remote says ER when it cannot communicate with the heating and cooling source or the system is not receiving power.
How do I fix the ER error on my DualTemp™ remote?
Check the outlet, power cord, power brick and remote batteries. Then restart the system and reset the remote if the ER message does not clear.
Does ER mean my DualTemp™ system is broken?
No. ER often means the remote and heating and cooling source need power restored or need to reconnect.
Can low batteries cause an ER error?
Low batteries can affect remote communication. Replace the batteries if the screen is dim, blank, slow to respond or shows a low battery indicator.
Why does the ER error keep coming back?
If ER keeps coming back, there may be an ongoing power, connection or hardware issue. Contact Customer Support if the troubleshooting steps do not resolve the error.
