Baseline Your Bed

What does it mean to baseline your bed?

Baselining measures the air pressure in your mattress when the bed is empty. This helps your Sleep Number® bed detect when you get in and out of bed and can improve Sleep Number® app data, including sleep session tracking.

Baseline your bed if your Sleep Number® app data looks wrong, your bed is not detecting in-bed or out-of-bed time correctly, or a support agent asks you to complete this step.

Quick answers

  • Baseline your bed when the bed is empty.
  • If you have an adjustable base, set the bed to Flat before you start.
  • Bedding, pillows, and sheets can stay on the bed.
  • People, pets, and heavy objects should be off the bed (bedding is ok).
  • Baselining may help with inaccurate Sleep Number® app tracking. If the issue continues, use the troubleshooting steps below.

Before you baseline your bed

  • If you have an adjustable base, set the bed position to Flat.
  • Set each side of the bed to the sleeper’s normal Sleep Number® setting.
  • Make sure no one is on the bed, including sleeping partners, children, or pets.
  • Remove heavy objects from the bed. Bedding, pillows, blankets, and sheets are okay.

If someone is still sleeping on one side of the bed, wait until both sides are empty before baselining. Baselining while someone is in bed can affect sleep tracking and app data.

How to baseline your bed in the Sleep Number® app

  1. Open the Sleep Number® app and sign in.
  2. Select Smart Bed.
  3. Select Settings in the top-right corner.
  4. Select Baseline Bed.
  5. Follow the prompts until the baseline is complete.

If you do not see Baseline Bed in the app, make sure your app is updated and that you are signed in with the account connected to your bed. If the option still does not appear, use the SleepIQ® website or your remote if supported.

How to baseline your bed on the SleepIQ® website

  1. Sign in to your SleepIQ® account at sleepiq.sleepnumber.com.
  2. Select Settings in the top-right corner.
  3. Select your bed’s name.
  4. Under Troubleshooting, select Baseline Bed.
  5. Select Yes when prompted.

If you do not see the Yes button, scroll farther down the page, zoom out, or try a different browser.

If the website does not load, try a different browser or device. Some older beds may not support online baselining. If your bed does not have online access, use the remote steps if available or contact us for help.

How to baseline your bed with a remote

Use these steps for Sleep Number 360® smart beds and Traditional Sleep Number beds that support this remote option.

  1. Go to the Home menu on your remote.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select Settings.
  4. Select Reset Preferences.
  5. Select Reset SleepIQ or Baseline SleepIQ. The wording may vary by remote version.
  6. Follow the prompts until the reset or baseline is complete.

If your remote does not show these menu options, your remote or bed model may not support remote baselining. If the remote shows an error, does not respond, or will not control both sides correctly, replace the batteries, stand near the bed, and try again. If the issue continues, contact us for help with your specific remote model.

If baselining does not fix the issue

Baselining helps your bed relearn its empty-bed pressure reading. If your issue continues after baselining, the problem may be related to app tracking, Wi-Fi connection, remote communication, power, air loss, or bed setup.

  • If sleep data looks wrong, confirm the bed was empty during baselining and try again.
  • If the bed does not stay connected to Wi-Fi, check your home network and reconnect the bed in the app.
  • If the bed will not adjust, respond, or go flat, check the power cord, surge protector or outlet, and remote batteries. Make sure all cords are firmly connected.
  • If one side of the bed is losing air, check the hose connections behind the bed and make sure they are firmly attached. Follow My Sleep Number® Bed is Losing Air for additional troubleshooting.
  • If the app cannot find or pair with your bed, make sure Bluetooth is on and keep your phone near the bed during setup. Find steps for how to pair your remote.
  • If the bed moves to Zero G on its own, check the remote, favorite settings, and app controls to make sure Zero G was not selected by mistake. If it continues, contact us for help.
  • If an under-bed light stays on, check the app or remote light controls and turn the light off. If the light turns back on or will not turn off, contact us for help.

Common questions about baselining

Will baselining erase my Sleep Number® setting?

Baselining should not change your preferred Sleep Number® setting. Before you start, set each side of the bed to the sleeper’s normal setting.

How often should I baseline my bed?

Do not baseline your bed regularly as routine maintenance. Baseline only when sleep tracking appears inaccurate, after setup or service, or when a support agent asks you to. If you need to baseline often, contact us for additional troubleshooting.
