Prepare your mattress and return items before your scheduled pickup. These steps help protect your bed and ensure you receive the correct credit for your return or exchange.

Before you prepare your bed for pickup

Set aside about 15 minutes. The steps you follow depend on whether your mattress has air chambers.

What you’ll need

  • White closure caps, if your mattress has air chambers
  • A mattress bag, available at many moving supply stores
  • A small box for the pump, remote or other return items, if included in your return

How to prepare your Sleep Number bed for return or exchange

First, check your mattress type

If your mattress has air chambers: Use your remote or the Sleep Number® app to set each side to Sleep Number® setting 50. Then follow the air-chamber steps below.

If your mattress does not have air chambers: You will not have a Sleep Number setting, hoses, a pump or air-chamber ports. Skip the air-chamber steps and begin with Pack the mattress and return items.

For mattresses with air chambers

  1. Locate the hose connection on each side of the mattress. It is usually near the middle of the side.
  2. Reach through the fabric opening to access the connection.
  3. Keep a white closure cap within reach.
  4. Press the tab and gently pull to disconnect the hose.
  5. Quickly place the closure cap over the air-chamber port.
  6. Repeat these steps on the other side.
  7. Disconnect the pump. If you have a Sleep Number base, the pump may be inside the base.

Pack the mattress and return items

  1. Place the pump in a small box, if your return includes one. Add the remote or other requested items to the box.
  2. Place the mattress in a mattress bag.
  3. Move the bagged mattress and boxed items to a dry, secure pickup location. If rain or snow is expected, keep everything under cover, such as in a garage or on a covered porch.

What to expect on pickup day

  • A technician will call or text you on the morning of your scheduled pickup.
  • Keep the prepared mattress and return items dry, secure and ready for pickup.

Doorstep Delivery return and exchange FAQs

Do all Sleep Number beds have a Sleep Number® setting?

No. Only beds with adjustable air chambers have a Sleep Number® setting. If your mattress does not have air chambers, skip the instructions for setting the bed to 50, disconnecting hoses and capping air-chamber ports.

Do I need closure caps for my return?

You need white closure caps only if your mattress has air chambers. The caps help keep air in the chambers after the hoses are disconnected.

How should I protect my mattress before pickup?

Place the mattress in a mattress bag and keep it in a dry, secure location. Use a garage, covered porch or another sheltered area during rain or snow.

When will the pickup technician contact me?

The technician will call or text you on the morning of your scheduled pickup.
