Learn how to assemble, set up, move, and disassemble your Sleep Number® Adjustable Base safely and correctly. This step-by-step guide helps ensure proper installation whether you’re setting up a new base, relocating it within your home, or preparing it for a move.

 

What is the Adjustable Base?

An adjustable base allows you to customize your sleep position with the push of a button. Key benefits include:

  • Head and foot adjustability
  • Zero gravity positioning for pressure relief
  • Underbed lighting for nighttime visibility
  • Compatibility with platform bed frames

These features are designed to improve comfort, relaxation, and overall sleep quality.

Materials List

Make sure you have all required components before beginning:

  • Adjustable base
  • Remote control(s)

Step 1: Unboxing the Adjustable Base

  1. Unbox the adjustable base or bases
  2. Place decking panels smooth side down, with the hip opening facing inward
  3. Cut the orange and white zip ties

    Note: Do not remove the white twist clip

Step 2: Install the Legs

  1. Remove legs from their packaging
  2. Assemble the legs (see details below)
  3. Carefully tilt the base onto its side to access the underside
  4. One person should hold the base steady while the other installs the legs

Leg Assembly Details

Each leg includes:

  • Four 3-inch segments
  • One cap
  • Felt pads (recommended for all flooring types except carpet)

To assemble:

  1. Choose the number of segments needed for your desired height
  2. Place the capped segment at the bottom
  3. Tighten until snug—do not overtighten
  4. Attach felt pads if installing on hard floors
  5. Repeat for all legs

Step 3: Check Underbed Connections

  • Confirm actuators and underbed lighting are securely connected to the control box
  • For Split King bases, do not connect the sync cable—store it in the circular opening
  • For King or California King bases, route the sync cable through the base openings and connect it to both control boxes

Step 4: Position the Base

  1. Unwrap the power cords and place them at the head of the bed
  2. Carefully lower the base and move it into position
  3. Ensure the head of the bed is near a power outlet

 

Step 5: Connect King or California King Bases

Skip this step if you do not have a King base

  1. Push both bases together
  2. Join the two bases together with the bed link connectors.
  3. Lift the panels at the head of the bed. Hold the panels upright and align the link into the grooves on the frame and press firmly until it snaps into place
  4. Lift the panels at the foot of the bed to install the bed link at the foot.

Step 6: Connect to Power

  • Plug the base into a grounded outlet
  • A green light on the power box confirms power is connected
  • Queen: 1 plug
  • King / California King: 2 plugs

Moving Your Adjustable Base: How to Disassemble

Follow these steps when relocating or storing your adjustable base.

Step 1: Disconnect Power

  1. Unplug the base from the power outlet (Queen: 1 plug, King: 2 plugs)
  2. Secure and bundle power cords
  3. Keep cords routed toward the head of the bed

 

Step 2: Remove bed link connectors

Skip this step if you do not have a Split King or Eastern King base

  • Store bed links with your hardware for reassembly

  1. With two people, tilt the base onto its side
  2. Disconnect the sync cable from both control boxes
  3. Store the sync cable with the base components

Skip this step if you do not have an Eastern King base

  1. With two people, tilt one side of the base on its edge so you have access to the control box. 
  2. Then disconnect the sync cable; it routes through the circular openings to connect to both control boxes. 
  3. Keep the sync cable with the base parts during transport.

 

Step 4: Remove the Legs

  1. Carefully tilt the base onto its side to access the underside (if you haven’t done so already).
  2. With the base tilted, unscrew each leg.
  3. Keep all leg segments together to maintain the same height during reassembly.

Tip: Use the port cup openings as handles for easier carrying.

 

Moving Your Adjustable Base: How to Reassemble

Step 1: Position the Adjustable Bed Base

  1. Move the adjustable bed base into its final installation location in the bedroom.
  2. Place decking panels smooth side down, with the hip opening facing inward.
  3. With two people (one person stabilizes while the other installs), tilt the base on its side to expose the underside to install the legs.

 

Step 2: Install the Legs

  1. Remove legs from their packaging.
  2. Carefully tilt the base onto its side to access the underside.
