Learn how to assemble, set up, move, disassemble, and reassemble your Sleep Number® Smart Mattress safely and correctly. This step‑by‑step guide is designed to help ensure proper installation whether you are setting up a new mattress, relocating it within your home, or preparing it for a move

 

What Is the Smart Mattress?

A Sleep Number® Smart Mattress works with a Smart Control System and the Sleep Number® app, allowing each sleeper to adjust firmness and track sleep insights for a personalized sleep experience.

Doorstep Delivery: Assembling Your Smart Mattress

Step 1: Unpack and position the mattress

  1. Remove the mattress from the outer bag and locate the product label
  2. With two people, place the mattress sleep‑surface side down
  3. Align the head of the mattress at the foot of the bed frame
  4. Remove the mattress bag completely

Note: It is normal to see small slits on the bottom of the cover. That is by design so air hoses can pass through and connect to air chambers when the bed is used with a Sleep Number base.

 

Step 2: Unzip your mattress (Mattress Only or FlexFit® 3)

Skip this step if you purchased a Foundation/Integrated Base, FlexFit 1 or 2

Mattress Only

Step 1: Open the Mattress Cover

  1. Locate the zipper along the mattress edge and unzip fully.
  2. Fold the cover in thirds toward the foot of the bed to expose the foam layer.

Step 2: Route the air hoses

  1. At the foot of the bed, locate the horizontal slit in the mattress cover.
  2. Insert the air hoses one at a time through the slit:
    • Blue hose: Right sleeper (bed‑label side)
    • White hose: Left sleeper
  3. Feed enough hose through so each reaches its side without stretching or twisting.

Step 3: Connect the air hoses

  1. Remove the white plastic air chamber cap.
  2. Firmly connect the hose to the air chamber.
  3. Repeat for the opposite side of the bed.

Step 4: Close the Mattress Cover (important safety step)

  1. Zip the mattress cover closed.

WARNING:

  • To ensure compliance with federal and state flammability requirements, the border wrap must be positioned correctly with the mattress as shown. The border wrap must be positioned over the foam/air chamber and remain flat during zipping.

  1. Unzip the mattress cover
  2. Route the foot‑warming wires through the designated cutout
  3. Once routed, zip the cover closed

Step 3: Identify and insert mattress straps (Adjustable Bases Only)

Skip this step if you did not purchase an Adjustable or FlexFit Base

Strap Types

  • Four light gray straps: Used at the hip and foot of the bed
  • Two black straps: Included with FlexTop™ or Split King models

How to Insert the Straps

a. Locate the slits in the mattress cover

b. Insert the entire metal tip of the strap through the slit and reinforcement patch

c. Tug gently to confirm the strap is fully expanded and secure

Strap Orientation

  • Gray straps: Laid toward the foot of the bed, button opening facing up
  • Black straps: Laid over the gap in the bed, button opening facing up

Step 4: Flip and center the mattress

  • Two people are required
  • Carefully flip the mattress and center it on the base

Step 5: Connect air hoses and optional features (Adjustable Bases Only)

Skip this step if you did not purchase an adjustable or FlexFit Base

  1. Finish attaching the mattress at both hip locations
  2. Remove the white air chamber cap
  3. Press the air hose in until you hear or feel a click
  4. If applicable, connect the foot‑warming wire

Step 5: Connect air hoses and optional features

 

Step 6: Secure the gray straps (Adjustable Bases Only)

Skip this step if you do not have a FlexTop or Split King

  1. Connect the straps at the hip (one per side)
  2. Then connect the straps at the foot (two total)
  3. Split King models use four foot straps
  4. Feed each strap under the bar and pull until the button aligns
  5. Press down until the button snaps into place

Step 6: Secure the gray straps (Adjustable Bases Only)

 

Step 7: Secure the black straps (FlexTop™ and Split King Only)

Skip this step if you do not have a FlexTop or Split King

  1. Stand on either side of the bed
  2. One person lifts a decking panel to access the snap receiver
  3. Pull the black strap tightly and snap it into place
  4. Repeat on the opposite side

Step 7: Secure the black straps (FlexTop™ and Split King Only)

 

Step 8: Connect the Smart Control System (No Base Only)

Skip this step if you have a FlexTop or Split King

  1. Place the Smart Control System in its desired location.
  2. Connect:
    • Right sleeper hose (blue)
    • Left sleeper hose (white)
    • Power cord (with small green wire)
  3. Plug into a nearby electrical outlet.
  4. Wait until all indicator lights turn on.

 

Step 9: Final Inspection

  • Check that all straps, hoses, and connections are secure
  • Confirm the mattress is centered and properly attached

Step 1: Prepare the Mattress for Moving

  1. Inflate both sides of the mattress to 100
  2. Disconnect the air hoses and attach the white closure caps
  3. If equipped, unplug foot‑warming connections near the hose area

 

Step 2: Detach the Mattress

  • Strap system:
    • Unclip gray straps at the hips (one per side) and foot (two total)
    • Split King models have four foot straps
    • FlexTop™ and Split King models also require unclipping black straps at the head of the bed
  • Place the mattress in a protective bag for transport
  • Disconnect and box the pump separately

  1. Position the mattress on the base
  2. Feed air hoses and foot‑warming wires (if applicable) through the base opening at the hip
  3. Remove white air chamber caps and reconnect hoses until they click
  4. Reconnect foot‑warming connections if applicable

Reattach the Mattress to the Base

  • Strap Attach System:
    • Reconnect gray straps at the hips first, then at the foot
    • Split King and FlexTop™ models use four foot straps
    • Feed straps under the bar and snap buttons into place
    • For FlexTop™ or Split King models, lift decking panels and reconnect black straps
  • Plug the power cord into an outlet
  • If a connectivity error appears on the remote, confirm the pump is properly connected and complete a factory reset if needed
